Motherhood

"Mama." How the word sounds like music into my ears when my barely one-month old son utters that word to me. It makes me realize I am already a mother.

Motherhood means responsibility. It took for the blessed Virgin Mary a lot of courage to say yes to the call of motherhood. We never know how this word means until we become one. Though this stage in our life requires so much of our time, by only cuddling our little bundle of joy, every ounce of tiredness and stress vanishes away.

In my life, I never imagined myself, not even once that I could become a mother one day. Because I thought I would be leading another path which I actually started to trod. However, when we are called to become a mother, we could never say no. And when we become one, we would be so glad we accepted the role, unless otherwise we resist the calling which could lead us to become an irresponsible mother.

Motherhood could be through choice or circumstance. But whichever way we become mothers, the best way to deal with the responsibility, is embrace it with prayer in our hearts that God would give us all the virtues required to become a good mother, if not the great mother.

I have friends and acquaintances who have grown enormously in character the moment they embrace the joys of motherhood. And I salute them.

However, motherhood does not only mean we, women, must take care of only our husbands, children and households. It means we also must take good care of ourselves - our most important responsibility. Because failure on our part to do so makes us ineffective and inefficient mothers. It may seem we have no time for ourselves; but we must make it a priority to have time for ourselves. We must be creative in finding this time.

As mothers are considered to be the light in the family, we must nurture this light and keep it shining. This is the profound meaning behind our role as mothers. And we can only play this role if we continue to hold on with our source of power - God, through our prayers and deep communion with Him...always....
